Club Instructors ( who’s who )
Mike Robertson is the senior Karate instructor for the clubs and has been studying and practising martial arts for over 30 years. He started training in Shotokan Karate in 1975 in Aberdeen under the leading Scottish instructor Sensei Ronnie Watt.
Mike received an excellent grounding in this art during those early days of Scottish Karate. He was graded 1st dan in 1979 by Master Eneoda of the JKA, 2nd dan in 1988 by Master Kase and Sensei Watt and then 3rd dan in 1995 by Sensei Watt and Sensei Hamish Adams both highly respected Scottish karateka.
Mike began Aikido training in 1996 with Steve Murphy, together they founded the Mearns & Deeside Aikido clubs. Over the years both have trained with some of the top martial artists in the world, and have forged strong links with many different Karate and Aikido groups throughout the world. Mike was graded 1st dan in Iwama-ryu Aikido in 2005 by Sensei Stephen Colville and is a club instructor with the Grampian Iwama-ryu group. In addition Mike is a member of the British Kendo Association and also deshi to Kazuo Yamazaki Sensei.
Steve Murphy is the senior Aikido instructor for the clubs and has studied and practised many martial arts over the past 25 years. He holds a 2nd dan in Shotokan style karate and 1st dan in Iwama style Aikido, he was one of the last students to be graded shodan by Saito Sensei before his death. He is responsible for the running of the Aboyne dojo, and also advises on the Laurencekirk and Marykirk clubs. Both men have trained together for many many years. Both to are proud to have trained at the Ibaraki dojo in Iwama Japan under the late Morihiro Saito Sensei. Steve and Mike continue to inspire all those who train with them, both men continue to study and train daily.
